This is the sequel to Karen M. McManus's One Of Us Is Lying. I can't explain how much I loved the first book. The character developments were amazing and the relationships between them were so smoothly aligned, I literally could not wait for the second book. However I was not completely impressed with it. I was kind of annoyed that we didn't get to follow the same characters from the first book but I appreciated her including them as side characters. I guess my main problem with it was that I didn't exactly love Phoebe but I mean she wasn't bad but like I said, I didn't Love her.
So One of Us is Next has three perspectives from the some seniors of Bayview High.
First, there's Maeve, Bronwyn's younger sister, whom we met in One of us is lying. She was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was seven and wasn’t fully disease-free until she was 14 years old. She has grown up close to her sister, who is now in college, and although it doesn't fully mention it in the book, it's obvious that she's struggling with her absence.
Then, there's Knox Myers and Phoebe Lawton who are the other two characters. I did like Knox but he wasn't my favourite and I only really liked Phoebe at the end.
So after the whole Simon Keller scandal, you can't exactly expect Bayview High to go back to normal. This book is set a year after One of Us is Lying and people are still getting over the aftermath of the whole situation and, of course, without Simon Keller's gossip app, About That, the students are somewhat lost. Undeniably, many have tried to imitate Simon's "legacy" and created their own gossip apps to gain popularity and excitement back to Bayview High. But Simon Keller was sneaky, he had a way of finding things that others never knew how to find. He looked where others wouldn't look. All theses Simon Keller Impersonator's could never get new information or "juicy gossip". Then, all students get a text from an unknown number.
" Listen up Bayview High. I'm only going to explain the rules once. Here's how we play Truth or Dare. I'll send a prompt to one person only- and you can't tell ANYONE if it's you. Don't spoil the element of surprise. It makes me cranky. You get 24 hours to text your secrets. Pick dare, and I'll give you a challenge. Either way, we'll have a little fun and relieve the monotony of our tedious existence."
Although i didn't love it as much as the first one, it was pretty good and I've read it a few times. The plot was really good and there are times where you are left out of the secret. It gives you a chance to think and try to solve the mystery yourself. I read it through the night I bought it and didn't finish until I finished it which was like the afternoon of the next day. I was going through a bit of insomnia at the time but it was a great escape.
